Numbers 15:32 to 15:36

Postby Hart60 » Mon Feb 25, 2013 10:34 am

Why was it OK for the congregation to gather stones to kill the man on the Sabbath but not for him to gather wood which was probably to keep his family warm or fed ?

Thanks,
Dan.

Did the stoning take place on the Sabbath? My impression is that the events in verses 33-36 could have occurred at a later time. Of course I could be wrong. The Artscroll commentary doesn't address the question.

I see no reason to assume so. To the contrary, it seems likely the process took time.

Hello David and welcome to the forum.
The text does say that they imprisoned the man until it could be decided how to deal with the situation,so yea I guess he might not have executed on the Sabbath.

Which is not to say that the incident is not troubling. It certainly is. So much so that some commentaries are of the opinion that the man deliberately set out to be caught violating Shabbos, having decided to make an example of himself.

(Of course, that rather begs the question.)

Perhaps we are not given the full story, maybe the man was testing the Lord to see if he would also provide kindling for Shabos as he did manna,Hashem didn't punish for that incident.

Perhaps. But if that were the case, why would he need to collect the wood on Shabbos? And why would he continue after having been warned by the witnesses to desist (as Rashi says the wording of the verses makes clear)?

I meant maybe he was hoping to prompt Hashem to provide two days worth of kindling on erev shabbat as he did manna and maybe that's why he ignored the warnings.
