There's no evidence the kindling was anything other than gathered wood, which would have existed before Shabbos as well. It was not provided on a day-by-day basis, as the mann was.

There's a difference of opinion on what the desecrator actually did.

As there are many differences of opinion regarding the entire matter, that's not all that surprising. I was not aware they differed on that point. What are the opinions?

Carrying, heaping, or pruning.

What happened to the second person who gathered stuff on Shabbat to make a fire; or the second priest who offered a strange fire; or the second person who blasphemed(in ref. to the stoned blasphemer in Numbers); or the second person who took banned goods from a banned city(in ref. to Achan); or the second king who disobeyed God/a prophet(in ref. to Saul and Amalek/banned sacr.)?(can you think of more severe firsts?).

Maybe there's something to being the first and severity? No?
If so, what's the dynamic behind this?

Because the constitution (The Torah) for this new nation, (Israel) had just been given, and as such, violations would have weakened it from the outset and it's credibility challenged. That's why this example is given.
Hope that helps,
