Is bone marrow kosher ?

Postby Hart60 » Fri Apr 26, 2013 11:17 am

Lev. 7:26 states -“Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.
Blood comes from bone marrow so is using bones in stew or soup for the marrow kosher ?

Thanks,
Dan.

The former. Americans don't call the vegetables "marrows". We call them "squashes". (I first encountered "vegetable marrows" when reading Agatha Christie, and was quite confused.)

That's interesting thanks rivka, I thought bone marrow would have been non kosher seeing as blood originates from it.

Only the blood itself is forbidden. Not the bloody juices that are left behind after kashering, and certainly not the marrow. Not the blood vessels either, for that matter.

During shabbat dinner, it's fought over at my table... with a piece of challah to go with it and a dab of salt..

I also enjoy chicken feet, turkey tails, chicken hearts, sweetbreads, and a number of other cuts sometimes viewed as offal -- and sometimes as delicacies. It's all a matter of perspective. And taste.
